Born and raised in The Bronx, NY to a Puerto Rican father and a mother from St Croix, USVI, Nelson grew up exposed to all genres of music by his culturally diverse family. A student of Rap, R&B, House, Jazz, Disco, Rock and Classical music has given him a knack to be able to play to any crowd. Affectionately called “Negro” & “Malo” by his team for his constant antics, he decided the only logical name be DJ El Negro Malo. Introduced to the NYC dance community in 2012, Nelson started taking salsa lessons and soon after began social dancing then performing with Island Touch NY and Zafire Dance Project. Nelson began his transition from performer to DJ at a Zafire social and it’s been full steam ahead ever since. With the help and guidance of DJ Alex El Maestro, he soon became the resident DJ of the Latin Mix Room at Candela Fridays and Salsamania Saturdays where he spins music and teaches a bachata class for NYC’s bachata enthusiasts on a weekly basis.
